Since the 1990s, Japan’s economy has experienced a prolonged period of stagnation, and concerns have been raised about the pace of progress in science and technology. In this context, considering future career paths from a global perspective can be a crucial option for the younger generation.
This lecture will provide specific information about the research environment and life in top-tier U.S. universities and subsequent career development opportunities. Topics will include Graduate Assistantships (financial support for graduate students, ranging from approximately ¥360,000 to ¥420,000 per month), salary levels for Assistant and Associate Professors (in the range of ¥18 million to ¥36 million annually), as well as the potential for obtaining permanent residency, starting a business, and future pension benefits (approximately ¥1.5 million per month after a minimum of 10 years of employment).
Dr. Uchino has steadily advanced through these stages, ultimately serving in the prominent position of Ambassador of Japan. In this lecture, he will explain the roadmap to success in the United States, based on his personal experiences.
Lecture Contents:
- Applying to U.S. Universities and Graduate Schools: The process and key aspects of writing effective Graduate Assistantship application letters.
- Strategies for Obtaining Permanent Residency Efficiently: Selecting research topics and identifying advisors with a track record of securing funding from the U.S. Department of Defense.
- The U.S. Permanent Residency Application Process.
- Entrepreneurship in the U.S.: Setting up a Small Business Company, an overview of the SBIR and STTR programs for small businesses, and writing compelling research proposals.
- Career Prospects: The speaker’s journey to becoming the Ambassador of Japan.
This lecture promises to be a valuable opportunity for students and young researchers interested in pursuing careers on the global stage. We look forward to your active participation.
